FG approves cut-off marks for 2013/2014 UTME

Abuja – The Federal Government on Tuesday in Abuja approved cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions for the 2013/2014 academic session.
The Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, announced the cut-off marks into Colleges of Education, Polytechnics and other degree-awarding  institutions as 150 while 180 is for federal universities.
Ruqayyatu Rufa' and Ojereinde
Ruqayyatu Rufa’ and Ojereinde
Rufa’i said this at the Fourth Combined Policy Meeting on Admission to Degree-Awarding Institutions, National Diploma (ND), Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and National Innovation Diploma (NID) awarding institutions.
She said the meeting was to plan for the selection of qualified candidates into the nations tertiary institutions and also to restore confidence in the education system.
“I implore all stakeholders to follow the Federal Government’s guidelines on admission which stipulates a 70:30 Technology/Non-Technology ratio for ND programmes.
“Also, 60:40 Science/Arts ratio for Degree and Nigeria Certificate in Education programmes and also to observe the criteria on merit, catchments and educationally less developed states.
“In addition, we must not forget the carrying-capacity of our institutions as approved by the accrediting bodies,’’ she said.
According to her, the accreditation bodies are the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
Rufa’i said in order to enhance the carrying capacities of the country’s institutions the ministry had undertaken continuous development and rehabilitation of infrastructure in the institutions of higher learning.
She, however, said the Tertiary Education Trust Fund had disbursed N256.4 billion over the past three years for diverse development activities in the institutions.
She said that at the polytechnic level all the 51 Federal and state and polytechnics had benefited from rehabilitation and upgrading of their laboratories to 21st century standards at a total of N15 billion.
She said that this had helped to enhance the teaching and learning process in the institutions.
She also said that work had also started on the construction of micro-teaching laboratories in our colleges of education.
The minister also said that all Federal Colleges of Education and one state College of Education per state would benefit from this, making a total of 58 institutions at a cost of N11.6 billion.
“I am pleased that these interventions continue to translate to expanded carrying capacity in our institutions.
“For this academic year, we expect carrying capacity to increase from 400,691 admitted last year to over 500,000.
“I urge all institutions to carefully examine their carrying capacities in relation to their expanding infrastructure. You must make sure that you fill the quota for each course.’’
She called on all institutions to adhere to the admission timetable as prepared by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Rufa’i commended JAMB on the successful conduct of the 2013 UTME.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said the meeting was to prepare grounds for needed capital development to engineer the Nigerian Technological growth that would be attained through quality and functional education of the citizens.
“Let me remind all the federal institutions that the ratio of 45:35:20 for merit, catchment and educationally less-developed states, respectively, is still in force and should be adhered to strictly to ensure national cohesion.
“All Nigerians must be given the opportunity to mix and educate freely in any part of the country.’’
Ojerinde also said the ratio of 40:40:20 for state-owned institutions must be strictly adhered to. (NAN)

NGF SHOWDOWN: Amaechi takes on Jang

LAGOS — Governors Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and Jonah Jang of Plateau State were, yesterday, locked in a war of words over their claims to the chairmanship of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF.
Amaechi, told his Plateau State colleague to stop impersonating him as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, and urged him to keep within the bounds of decorum.
Amaechi and Jang
Amaechi and Jang
Jang in a riposte dismissed Amaechi’s charge as funny. Jang reiterated his claim that his endorsement by 19 Northern governors was tantamount to an election, boasting that he was set to show his superior claim at a meeting of the forum he has summoned for today.
The exchange followed Governor Jang’s summon of a meeting of the NGF for today ahead of a scheduled meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan over disputes on the sharing of the federation account for the month of May.
Governor Amaechi while urging governors to honour the meeting with the president, however, disowned the meeting of the NGF summoned by Jang.
Governors stick to their earlier positions
Yesterday, several governors stood on their previous positions in the NGF. Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, NSGF, Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, it was learnt, was outside the country and may not send a representative to the Jang meeting. His colleague in Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswam who is also outside the country on official assignment, could send a representative to attend the Jang meeting.
“Any meeting called by Governor Jang as chairman of the NGF would be honoured by Governor Suswam,” an aide said. Several other governors, it was learnt, yesterday, stuck to their known positions on the division in the NGF.
Governor Amaechi in a statement yesterday said: “On Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16, reports in the media credited to my brother governor, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State announced that he has called for a Nigeria Governors’ Forum meeting. Ordinarily I would have ignored these reports as I do not imagine that as governors who hold our people’s mandate through the democratic process of free and fair elections, we would do anything to impugn our integrity.
“However as Chairman of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, elected by my colleagues to safeguard their integrity and that of the forum, it has become imperative for me to request my brother, Governor Jang, to remain within the confines of decorum and cease to impersonate me and to stop parading himself as NGF chairman. There is only one chairman of the forum, duly elected by a vote tally of 19:16 on Friday, May 24, 2013.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I as chairman of the NGF have not called for any Governors’ Forum meeting for Monday, June 17, 2013. The only meeting scheduled for Monday June 17, is a meeting of all Governors with His Excellency, President Goodluck Jonathan scheduled to hold at 9pm at Aso Rock Villa. All governors should please ensure attendance at this meeting with Mr. President.
This storm shall pass — Amaechi
“I wish to reassure my brother governors that this storm shall pass and we all will be reunited as one family committed to our nation’s unity and supporting Mr. President in his vision for a Nigeria that safeguards the rights of all its citizens to good governance and democratic norms.
“Governor Jang is my brother and friend and I harbour no ill feelings against him, but it is important that he stops this impersonation, as it could threaten all the good work we all have done together.
“May I remind Governor Jang that there is a legal action that has been instituted against him by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State to stop him from parading himself as the chairman of NGF. As leaders elected by our people, Nigerians are closely watching us. We must comport ourselves according to the dictates and principles of democratic and lawful practices and norms.”

We’ll see today  — Jang
Responding to Amaechi, Jang through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ayuba Pam described Amaechi’s assertion as funny.
Asserting that he was elected by the majority of governors and was in no way impersonating anybody, Jang said:
“It is funny to say that a man who was nominated by consensus by the Northern governors who are 19 and presented to the larger meeting of the governors would impersonate anybody. It is all about who is in charge of the forum and tomorrow’s (today’s) meeting convened by Jang will show who really has the support of majority of the governors.
“We do not want to join issues with Governor Amaechi because he is still a member of the governors’ family and just like Governor Jang has said repeatedly, this is a family problem that would be resolved amicably.
“All we can do is to appeal to Governor Amaechi to extend the same cooperation that Jang gave him when he was the chairman of the forum to Jang. Jang was always among the first governors to be in Abuja each time he (Amaechi) called a meeting and we urge him to reciprocate this. We even encourage him to attend tomorrow’s meeting convened by Jang because the agenda is for the benefit of every state”, he said.

PHCN earmarks N167m for upgrade of power generation in Kebbi

Zuru (Kebbi) -  The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has earmarked N167 million for the upgrade of electricity supply to Zuru Emirate in Kebbi.
Alhaji Mohammed Danjuma, the Senior Special Assistant on Power Sector Advocacy to the Minister of Power, made this known in an interview with journalists in Zuru on Monday.
Danjuma said the amount would be spent on the upgrade of electricity facilities in Zuru, Sakaba, Danko/Wasagu and Fakai local government areas of Kebbi.
He said new transformers and electrical materials would be installed for improved power supply to the areas, noting that the measure was due to irregular supply of electricity to the areas over a long period.
According to him, power supply will improve nationwide by the first quarter of 2014 when the National Independent Power Projects (NIPP) are expected to be completed.
“Electricity supply will improve nationwide by the quarter of 2014 as generation will increase from 400 megawatts to 10,000 megawatts.’’
He said that the increase in megawatts, generation, transmission and distribution would eliminate irregular electricity supply.
He noted that other sources of power supply such as solar, hydro and coal would also be explored to end “load shedding.’’
NAN reports that the collapse of Electricity Towers in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi threw the state into darkness in the past three weeks. (NAN)

Why I left Tinsel – Damilola Adegbite

Over the past few years, Damilola Adegbite has become one of the most recognizable actresses in Africa.  She plays the role of ‘Thelma Duke’, the gorgeous actress in the day time soap, Tinsel on Africa Magic; a role which has seen her become a favourite of soap lovers. Damilola, who recently left the set of Tinsel to explore the film industry, during a courtesy visit to Vanguard, spoke on why she left the soap, life outside Tinsel, her relationship and more. Enjoy!
You left Tinsel. Why?
Well, it was… as much as people don’t believe me, it was a personal decision. I just wanted to experience more of the movie world. It really wasn’t an easy decision to make because Tinsel has been part of my life for a while and we are family. But the only thing constant is change; basically every human being should re-evaluate their lives more often and make decisions.
I wanted to experience film. I wanted to experience movie-making and that is what I am doing now. And, I am pleased with it.
Can you describe your experience on Tinsel? You were one of the first on Tinsel?
I will say I am one of the few that had it luckily. Tinsel is a very pretty platform. I didn’t have to deal with the exploitation that other actors go through for getting script and all that. I had a proper platform and it was a worthwhile experience and one I will always be grateful for. I enjoyed it while it lasted.
What is your relationship with Gbenro Ajibade?
Laughs.  We are ex-colleagues.  We are just friends.
For four years, you played Thelma in Tinsel. How did that role influence your life?
Definitely not negatively! Well, do you mean affecting my personal life or my career?
I mean both.
Well, personally, no. I learnt to detach myself from the characters of the roles that I play. Career wise, it gave me a beautiful platform that I am building on today.
*Damilola
*Damilola
What other movies are you doing now?
Beside the movie I just finished with Michelle, which is premiering on 13th – and I am excited about that, I will be going into production with two Nollywood big names in February. I will rather not expose who they are now so as not to spoil the surprise. But, there other productions lined up as well.
Are you hoping for endorsements from companies?
Well, it depends on the plan that you have for yourself. Like I said, I am not really concentrating on endorsements now. I would like my acting to speak for me and then, from there, if anything else comes up, that’s fine. But I am just breaking off the platforms now and want to continue building something. So, endorsements are welcome, of course. But they are not really my focus right now but they are welcome.
Now that you are in another phase of your career, would you say Tinsel sort of limited you to an extent?
I will say ‘yes’ to a certain extent because of the time. It’s very time consuming working on soaps. Tinsel, I would say is a pretty peculiar production as well, because they emphasise a lot on quality and, you know, all of that is pretty time consuming. No producer would like to work with someone they cannot guaranty would be there. It would give their production as much time and you know effort. So, I would say that it did limit me to a certain extent; which is why I had to come to a decision.

Tell us a bit about your background?
Well, Damilola Adegbite was born into a family of four. I was born and raised in Lagos. In Surulere, to be precise, so I grew up in Surulere. I have a degree in Business Administration from Bowen University.

What childhood memories do you have of Surulere?
Wow! I had a fun childhood in Surulere; those street carnivals and all that. It was fun. And, the friends I had in that area, which would be exclusive to me. I had a lot of friends in the area, so you could basically just get up and walk into anybody’s house, eat with them and sleep there if you wanted to. Everybody’s door was open to you all the time in my neighbourhood, anyway.
How did you get into acting?
It’s always been a passion for me. Some people, along the course of life, decide to choose certain careers based on wherever life leads them. I am pretty focused and I know what I want and I always try to stick to that. I have always wanted to be in the arts. Even while growing up, everyone around me saw that that was what I wanted to do. I was always in some music or theatre-related issue. I was always doing something that had to do with the arts.

So what’s your style like? How will you describe your style?
My style will be: simple, classy, and comfortable. I don’t like discomfort, even if it means looking good. No. I like to be comfortable and relaxed wherever I am; free to move around without being afraid that my skirt is too short or whatever. So, I am just simple but classy.
*Damilola
*Damilola
You are always well put together on the red carpet. Do you have a special designer for your clothes?
Well, I try to patronize as many people as I can in the fashion industry. Especially, if your item or your piece flatters me or something I could rock. I basically source for most of the clothes you see.  They could be something I pick off a designer’s rack or something I put together myself.

So, do you have a role model in the industry when it comes to acting? Is there anybody you look up to?
Of course, there are a lot of people I admire in the industry. I learn a lot from them; I probably just watch their movies. A few of my personal favourites: I like Mercy Johnson. I like her acting. I think she is good. I like Mr. Ibu; he makes me laugh. There is something very unique about him. His talent is quite unique. I like Mojid Micheal as well. He is not a Nigerian but I think he is a very good actor. Everybody has something I like.
What would be your greatest fantasy?
I remember that yesterday I was reading a newspaper and it was talking about Mr. Aliko Dangote.  He was referred to as the richest man in Africa and there was a picture of him sitting down, eating a bowl of food.  I remember thinking to myself, to wake up in the morning knowing that you are the richest man in Africa and yet you are dressed in shorts and a tee-shirt!  You are just chilling. There must be a huge amount of self fulfillment in that.
Regardless of what it is, where I am, what I achieved, whenever, wherever, I want to be able to wake up in the morning, look at myself in the mirror and say: “You are not doing badly Damilola”. So, basically, I would want to, at all times, be happy with where I am.
What won’t you wear in the name of fashion?
I wouldn’t wear a loud wig in the name of fashion; a coloured wig.
You have a boyfriend?
Yes
How did you meet?
I saw him. I liked him and we started talking; from there till today.
Tell us what you don’t like about men.
I don’t like men who over-indulge in alcohol. I like men that have regard for themselves and for the people around them. You would have to come across to me as a very serious minded person to be with me.  That’s the honest truth.

10 celebrities we can’t get enough of….

Can troubled Eagles fly over Tahiti?

At 8 o’clock tonight, Africa’s Champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on their Tahiti counterparts  in the ongoing FIFA Confederations Cup in Brasil.
Many Nigerians are disappointed that their darling Super Eagles were the last team to arrive Brasil due to dispute over bonuses. This development they believed has hampered the Eagles’ preparations thereby giving the small Polynesian island a glimmer of hope of causing an upset.
NO CAUSE FOR ALARM: Super Eagles players taking tutorials from coach Keshi
NO CAUSE FOR ALARM: Super Eagles players taking tutorials from coach Keshi

On paper, Nigeria is favourite. For example, Nigeria is Africa’s leading nation with vast experience of international competition, while Tahiti is a 138th-ranked island with a population of just 178,000. These two statistics alone mean there should be a vast gulf in class between the two sides this evening as they contest their opening games.
But with Nigeria troubled by a dispute between the squad and the nation’s football federation,  are the Super Eagles well prepared and organised to fly over the Tahitian side? Do you think the Eagles can defeat Tahiti and with what scores?

Tonto Dike speaks on her fall at Iyanya’s London concert

Controversial actress turned singer Tonto Dike strutted onto the stage to perform at Iyanya’s Kukere Concert on the 9th of June 2013 in London only to hit the floor moments later.
It’s her most famous fall and it got social media buzzing at once.
Tonto Dike has found it imperative to clear the air concerning this fall following rumours  she may have been ‘drunk’ or ‘ high’ or both before hitting the stage.
She tells Nollywood Movies Sky329 that her dress was the chief culprit followed by her shoes and then the ‘slippery’ floor.
*Tonto rising after her sudden fall
*Tonto rising after her sudden fall
“It was a big…well not a big fall and I managed it well. I fell because I had this very long dress, and  this very high shoe and a slippery ground, and because I wasn’t supposed to dance at my  first coming out (sic). I had another outfit I could put on to really perform if I wanted to; it was my choice but I just came on and they played the song and I just had to dance and I slipped.
I made it fun really, I got up and danced, I didn’t want to disappoint anybody especially myself. When I went back stage, I was dancing my head off.  I couldn’t go back on stage because Iyanya was on stage and it was about closing. It was all his time. Nobody went back on stage after him. I wish I went back to dance again and not fall that time.

Arnold Schwarzenegger to start ‘Terminator 5′ shooting in January

The 65-year-old actor is to reprise his most iconic role as the killer Cyberdyne cyborg for the first time since 2003′s ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines’ and filming will begin at the start of 2014.
During an appearance at the 21st Century Financial Education Summit in Australia, Schwarzenegger is reported to have said: “I’m very happy that the studios want me to be in ‘Terminator 5′ and to star as The Terminator, which we start shooting in January.”

Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis – a friend of ‘Terminator’ creator James Cameron – have been hired to write the script for the sequel, while Paramount has been in talks to distribute the movie.
Schwarzenegger did not make an appearance in 2009′s fourth instalment ‘Terminator Salvation’ because he was working as the Governor of California at the time.

MTN Project Fame unites artistes in concert

When twenty of the many products of MTN Project Fame West Africa gather in concert come June 21 and 28, in Calabar and Lagos respectively, to celebrate what is, surreptitiously, half a decade of producing super stars, emotion will be triggered towards memories of what was, what is and what can be.
Like parents who are attending the convocation ceremony of their child, there, certainly, will be memories of a shy Iyanya, teenage Chidimma, vivacious Adetoun or a crude Praiz and subtly multi-talented Kesse, in the days when they graced our national television screens to deliver fine, abridge lines of local and foreign songs.

Between Chuddy K and SQN

What seems to have become a trend in the Nigerian music industry is artistes falling apart with their record labels. The last 12 months have recorded such occurrences, one of the most popular was between Wizkid and Banky W, the EME boss.
*Chuddy
*Chuddy
This time, it is between, Chuddy K and Wale Kuku of SQN. Reacting to the allegation of leaving the label illegally, the publicist to “gaga crazy” crooner, Emmanuel Abba, said that there was a breach of contract between Chuddy K and SQN and as a result, they have to terminate the contract through their lawyer.
“The contract was signed without the consent of Chuddy K’s lawyer and the label since then, has not been keeping to the terms of the agreement. They are not paying him well, they are owing him up to four shows now. As far as I am concern, there was a breach of contract and as a result, the contract has been terminated.
Chuddy K is in South Africa now celebrating with D’Banj on his birthday,” he said.
Responding, Wale Kuku, SQN boss said that the label is not owing the singer any dime and that nobody has the right to do any business with Chuddy K except through him.
“That’s very impossible, because we are very thorough, principled and professional. Till date, we don’t owe Chuddy K a dime, he can’t possibly confront the record label with such a statement” Wale said. The latest gist is that Chuddy K has moved on with his own label called, “Kent records” just like Wizkid did.

MTN Nigeria halts SIM swap by proxy

Lagos – Mr Akinwale Goodluck, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN Nigeria, has announced the decision of the company to discontinue SIM swaps by proxy with effect from June 7.

Goodluck said this in a statement made available on Thursday in Lagos.

He said that after June 7, customers who wished to swap or replace their SIM cards as a result of their phones being stolen, destroyed or misplaced must do so in person.

According to him, the decision was taken in order to protect customers’ data and preserve the overall integrity of the SIM swap process.

“In recent months, unscrupulous elements have started to exploit the proxy SIM swap process and there have been incidents of unauthorised people fraudulently obtaining SIM cards belonging to others.

“The implication of this decision is that customers will now have to appear in person at the service outlets nearest to them to request and obtain new SIM cards.

“Such requests will be treated promptly after proper ID validation from the SIM registration database and upon presentation of valid identification such as ID card, international passport or driver’s licence,” he said.

Goodluck added that the customer would also be required to answer security questions before a new SIM card would be issued.

He also called on the company’s subscribers to urgently register their SIMs in view of the June 30 deadline or risk suspension of their mobile lines.

Goodluck urged customers to register all SIM cards in their possession including those in phones, laptops, POS machines and all other SIM-enabled devices.

Mr Akin Braithwaite, the Customer Relations Executive of MTN, said that the organisation attached great seriousness to the issue of customer and data security.

Braithwaite said that a significant number of SIM swap-related fraud were committed by people who were very close to the victims and had access to their personal data.

He said that the new requirement that customers should carry out the SIM swaps in person would check the activities of fraudsters in this regard.

Vigilantes target extremists in northeast Nigeria AP News | Jun 12, 2013

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Young men armed with machetes and sticks have entered the streets of Nigeria's biggest city in the northeast to target suspected Islamic extremists, even as soldiers continued an offensive against the radical fighters.
The vigilante group, known as "Civilian JTF," a play off the acronym used to describe the joint military and police taskforce in the region, started taking up arms after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency May 14 in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states — a territory of around 155,000 square kilometers (60,000 square miles) of the Sahel bordering Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
In a nationally televised speech, Jonathan admitted the nation had lost control of some villages and towns to extremist fighters already responsible for more than 1,600 killings since 2010 alone, according to an Associated Press count.
In the time since, the military claims it has killed and arrested suspected extremists as it now controls security for the region with expanded powers to arrest anyone and occupy any building. However, military officials who spoke to journalists on a recent trip through the northeast acknowledged many fighters likely fled with heavy weaponry including anti-aircraft guns and still remain a major threat to Africa's most populous nation.
The members of Civilian JTF have now come under attack from extremists for pointing out suspects to soldiers.
An AP reporter met a group of the young men belonging to the vigilantes recently in the streets of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state and the spiritual home of the extremist network Boko Haram. The men ranged in age from 17 to 25 and carried machetes, iron bars and batons to protect themselves.
The men said they formed their own patrols after becoming tired of soldiers routinely rounding up any young man found in a neighborhood after an extremist attack in the city. Soldiers in Nigeria's military, drawn from across the more than 250 ethnicities in the nation, can have difficulties speaking local languages and understanding customs in regions far from their home. The young men said their local knowledge helps the soldiers do their job better.
"We are into this to salvage our people from the Boko Haram who had killed our people, security operatives and destroyed our economy," vigilante Isa Musa said. "We are not afraid of them because we are doing a just cause and God is by our side."
Musa said the vigilantes didn't fear the extremists, even though their fighters carry Kalashnikov assault rifles and other sophisticated weaponry.
"All we want is prayers from the people and their cooperation. We are working together with the JTF soldiers," he said. "We want government to assist us with more weapons like cutlasses, iron batons and axes."
Last Friday, however, the Civilian JTF members found themselves a target of a suspected Boko Haram attack. Gunmen hid their assault rifles inside a coffin and opened fire on them in Maiduguri. At least 13 people were killed in that attack, witnesses said.
It's not clear whether these civilian groups receive either the passive acceptance or the endorsement of the military now securing Maiduguri, though it would appear likely as soldiers seem to allow their movement in a city filled with sandbagged roadblocks. Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, a military spokesman in the city, could not be reached for comment as security forces have shut down mobile phone networks in the northeast as part of the offensive.
What is known is that suspects recently pointed out by the vigilantes in three cases ended up dead. Two were shot and killed for "trying to escape," a witness recently said. An AP journalist saw the bodies of eight other suspected extremists dead in a ditch after being pointed out last week by vigilantes. Human rights activists and international organizations routinely document cases of soldiers and police carrying out so-called "extrajudicial killings" in Nigeria, meaning that those pointed out could end up dead or imprisoned without charges.
However, those concerns don't bother the civilians, who continue their armed patrols.
"We have lost count of how many Boko Haram we have caught and handed over to the soldiers," vigilante Abubakar Malum said. "And we are going after more of them."
